Madrid, June 9th, 2020 Frau Ursula von der Leyen President of the European Commission EC-PRESIDENT-VDL@ec.europa.eu BRUSSELS/BELGIUM Dear Frau President, First of all, I want to thank the European Union and you personally, as President of the European Commission, for the generosity of the assistance to be provided to the EU member States more affected by the coronavirus pandemic. I am sending you a copy of the article “Intervenidnos, por favor”, published yesterday in the digital newspaper “Sevillainfo”, in which I beg the European institutions to intervene as much as possible to alleviate the disastrous situation of the Spanish economy, within the limits of non-interference in the political affairs of Spain. According to the latest foresights of the Banco de España, the Spanish GDP will fall this year up to 15% and public debt will reach 120%. What does the Spanish Government intend to do to face this economic pandemic? According to the Vice-president of the Government, the Marxist-populist, Pablo Iglesias, it will foster State intervention in the economy, nationalize industries, expand public expenditure, raise existing taxes and create new ones, intervene in the housing market, provide social and economic assistance without limit to those in need, abolish fully the 2012 labour reform…It is just the opposite to what Spain needs at the present time. Precisely, the labour reform was the last structural reform undertaken by any Spanish Government. The Government will try to use freely the important sums of money to be provided by the European institutions eluding any EU control, in order to take advantage of them to win favours and votes and increase its political clientele. As Commissioner Johannes Hahn has stated, States receiving the money from the Recovery Fund will have to comply with their duties and undertake the structural reforms recommended by the European Commission. I hope that the Commission will be firm with the Spanish Government and make it to comply duly with its obligation, if it wants to enjoy the financial manna coming from Brussels. I hope that the Commission will be up to its responsibility in order to help the Spanish people and prevent malpractices by their Government. Thank you very much for your kind cooperation. Mit besten Wünschen Dr. José Antonio de Yturriaga Ambassador of Spain
